Join Our New Change by Design Workshop in Johannesburg!
We are excited to announce that applications are now open for our upcoming Change by Design workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa. This workshop will wrap up our first series of engagements in Johannesburg and will focus on exploring innovative strategies and tools for upgrading informally occupied buildings in the inner city.
Organised by ASF-UK in partnership with 1to1 – Agency of Engagement, SERI (Social Economic Rights Institute) and IIED (International Institute for Environment and Development), this initiative is further supported by the Asivikelane initiative and several university partners.
The workshop counts as Stage B of the RIBA CPD accredited independent learning course Challenging Practice: Essentials for the Social Production of Habitat by ASF-International.
Call for Workshop Participants
We are excited to invite a multidisciplinary group of action-research volunteers to join us in addressing the pressing housing challenges facing inner-city Johannesburg. Building on three successful workshops held between 2023 and 2024, we are launching a new initiative to support residents and their organisations, including the Inner City Federation and the Inner City Resource Centre, in outlining concrete strategies for upgrading informally occupied buildings into viable and affordable housing solutions.
Participants will have a unique opportunity to engage in a dynamic action-learning experience that draws upon two years of collaboration in Johannesburg's inner city, alongside a diverse network of grassroots organisers, practitioners, and researchers who have contributed to Change by Design Johannesburg thus far.
We will start with a one-day online symposium in December 2024, followed by an immersive one-week live workshop in Johannesburg in January 2025. Throughout this journey, we will work closely with our partners to adapt ASF-UK’s Change by Design methodology, defining actionable steps that can improve lives in the inner city and advocate for enduring change.
