Challenging Practice is an independent-learning programme that seeks to enable built environment practitioners and students to engage reflexively with the challenges of inclusive and sustainable urban development. The course is based on principles of active, dynamic, and action-based learning.

Stage A Challenging Practice consists of a two-day seminar which is designed to enable participants to deepen their understanding of the topics covered by the preparatory readings through scenario-building activities and role-play exercises based on real case studies, where the challenges of intervening are met with the layered realities of different social, cultural, political and economic contexts. The seminar is part of RIBA CPD Core Curriculum and all participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion for Stage A.

Stage A Challenging Practice seminar prepares participants for working in the field, whether in the global North or South, and can be followed up with a Stage B internship or workshop in which these newly learnt skills will be put into practice.
